ink on vellum
ABOUT THIS WORK
I love the silky look of the near transparent vellum with the smooth deep black ink. Though the figure is quite recognizable, this is a blind contour. Something about the pose and turn of the head and face had this saint-like quality to it, ergo its name.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This is a from series of blind contours* when I was transitioning from a series of abstract paintings, to what would be video / performance, figurative work. All I knew at the time was that I was fascinated by the figure again, but wanted to look and draw in a way that was different, that got past the visual assumptions ingrained in my hands and the way I am used to seeing.
*Blind contours are a method in which the artist draws in a continuous line while only looking at the subject, not at the page.
